Pre-Literacy and Early Literacy Instruction Groups FAQ

We are getting a ton of great feedback about the pre-literacy and early literacy instruction groups that we are now forming for this fall. Based on the great conversations that we've had with parents so far, we've put together a list of the most frequently asked questions.

What age group is this for?

Our groups are based on the child's level determined through the pre-test. Typically our Pre-Literacy groups are 4-5 and Early Literacy groups are 5-7. We also offer individualized reading intervention to children of all ages and compensatory strategy tutoring for middle school and high school students.

What is the schedule?

Pre-Literacy and Early Literacy groups start mid-September, meet twice a week for 45 minutes and run for 12 weeks total. Group options are Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday at 3, 4, or 5.

How large are the groups?

Groups are made up of an instructor and 2 to 4 children.

What type of curriculum do you use?

First of all, we believe you can’t improve what you don’t measure, so our curriculum is diagnostic throughout, starting with the pre-test that all children are given to determine group placement. Our interactive groups are systematic in building skills and all rely on cumulative lessons building on the skills learned over a 12-week period. All instruction is based on scientifically researched best practices proven to get results through multi-sensory, explicit instruction.

What is needed to participate?

We conduct instructional groups over a HIPAA compliant platform similar to Zoom. Children can participate from the comfort of their own home with a laptop or tablet and internet access. All additional materials needed for instructional groups will be delivered directly to your home.

Will testing be done?

Diagnostic placement tests will be given prior to the program beginning and re-administered over the course of 12 weeks to measure progress and determine next steps.

This allows us to individualize instruction based on careful and continued assessment. Content taught must be mastered to automaticity prior to continuing.

Why is KCSP great at reading instruction?

The short answer is because speech and reading are highly related and we have a unique skill set that equips us to help with the true, underlying problem. The more technical answer is that speech-language pathologists have a unique knowledge about language subsystems (i.e., phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics), therefore, as speech pathologists, we have an important role in helping to increase future reading success in children by incorporating literacy training into our practice.

  • Reading comprehension is the product of language comprehension and decoding. The Simple View of Reading (Gough & Tunmer 1986)

  • The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA) position statement on literacy states: Speech-language pathologists play a critical role in the development of literacy for children and adolescents with communication disorders.

  • Children with speech and language deficits are 4 – 5x more likely to have reading problems than children without speech and language disorders (R.Lyon).

How much does it cost to enroll?

Our pay-as-you-go plan is $50 per session or for a discounted rate of $45 per session, two payments of $540 can be made on or before September 15th and November 15th.

Do you offer anything in-person?

When CDC guidance allows, we offer services in our Mission, KS office and can also provide in-home services as needed. Please call us to discuss.
